audio documentary (4 x 1h)

Over the course of four episodes, Nous sortirons de nos cuisines brings to life the story of Quebec's first feminist theatre company, the Théâtre des Cuisines, and traces the history of feminist activism in Quebec.

The company's foundational play, Nous aurons les enfants que nous voulons (We Will Bear the Children We Want), was first performed on March 8th 1974 in front of 3,000 people in Montreal, ironically in a church basement. Never before had a play been devoted to the subject abortion in Quebec, a crime punishable by imprisonment at the time in Canada. The women behind the Théâtres des cuisines (The Kitchen's Theatre) were also instrumental in the struggle for free abortions in Quebec, setting up an (illegal) abortion reference service.

Môman travaille pas, a trop d'ouvrage (Mum Doesn't Work, She Has Too Much To Do), was launched the following year. Avant-garde for its time, the play revolves around the invisible work of women and portrays housewives leading a general strike, leaving men with the burden of housework and parental duties. Well ahead of its time, As-tu vu? Les maisons s'emportent! (Have You Seen Us With Our Homes on Our Backs?) brought the concept of mental load before audiences in 1980. Issues and struggles that still resonate today.
